Financial News

If You Owe the IRS and Can’t Pay, This Is What You Should and Shouldn’t Do.

This piece in The Washington Post by Michelle Singletary delivers exactly what it promises. I first heard her delightful spirit on the Post Reports podcast and then got into reading her finance article.

If you can’t pay your taxes, maybe start here to learn more about making any payment you can, not getting scammed by outside agencies, and where to turn for help.

News today (05–14–21): Turns out, the IRS is dealing with delays on their end as well.

Note: I am NOT a financial wiz, accountant, or banker.

Look, I haven’t had any trouble with the IRS, but one year I paid my taxes a little late and nothing happened. I also called the actual IRS and spoke to…yes, an actual very nice person on the phone who directed me to the website to complete a process I thought I had to hire a professional for. Did the thing in a matter of minutes. It felt great.

Education

How the Pandemic Prompted Teachers to Give Students More Flexibility, Choice (in Charts)

From Education Week

“If you’re assessing writing, then students should write. But if teachers want to know whether their students understand a math concept or a literary metaphor or a historical theme, why not let them record a video of their problem-solving process, or explain their thinking verbally, or post a meme to a class discussion board?”

Note: I have professionals credentials in the field of education (M.A, Ed. there, folks) and maintain my certification and areas of licensure in the field). This is where I can really shine.

I hold mixed feelings about a few things from the education sector over the past year, but I do hope teachers will embrace allowing students to demonstrate learning and knowledge and mastery in various ways. That’s real life, I think.

Foodstuffs

Breakfast on the Cheap

Full disclosure: I use Plan to Eat. Love it. I also love pulling together something delicious from leftovers, which is exactly what this recipe shows you how to do: Simple, Budget-Friendly Frittata Recipe.

The best thing I make from stragglers in the refrigerator is my mish-mash chili. To I invite beef, spices and seasonings, tomato sauce, salsa, maybe chicken or pork to the party. Seriously, whatever’s hanging out that sounds like it should be hanging as an ingredient in chili.

Parenthood

An interesting essay by Serena Sigillito.

The Two Vocations: Mothers balancing work and children find different ways of answering their callings

I appreciate discussions of motherhood, creativity, and work. I’ve written before about blending and integrating my freelance work with family life. For now, I’ll summarize my path from the days when I was but young and knew not much: There isn’t one right way mother and work.
